About CML

A pioneer in its field, the Center for Media Literacy (CML) is an educational organization that provides leadership, public education, professional development and educational resources nationally. Dedicated to promoting and supporting media literacy education as a framework for accessing, analyzing, evaluating, creating and participating with media content, CML works to help citizens, especially the young, develop critical thinking and media production skills needed to live fully in the 21st century media culture. The ultimate goal is to make wise choices possible.

CML: Resources for English/Language Arts

For 500 years, since the invention of moveable type, we have valued the basic literacy skills of reading and writing. Today, we must build on this foundation and prepare young people for living and learning in a global culture that is connected through multi-media, and influenced by powerful images, words and sounds.

"It is no longer enough to simply read and write. Students must also become literate in the understanding of visual messages...to distinguish facts from propaganda, analysis from banter, and important news from coverage"

— Ernest Boyer
